Top tips on keeping your Smart Tech safe and secure

Homes across the UK are quickly becoming smart homes. With the likes of Alexa and Google helping families check the weather, set an alarm and play their favourites songs, smart home devices are becoming an essential part of any household.

Like most things, it’s important to take the relative precautions to keep your smart tech as safe and secure as possible. At Neos, we take security very seriously. Our Chief Information Security Officer, Dominik, has given us his top tips on how you can keep your Neos system as safely as possible.

 

  1. Passwords are key!

The best thing you can do to keep your system safe is to always use a truly unique password for your Neos system. This is the most effective way to protect yourself in the unlikely event of hacking.

Create a password that is hard to guess and contains a variety of characters. Make sure you don’t share your credentials with anybody (other than the authorised Neos technical support).

 

  1. Best position for your SmartCam

When you leave the house, place your SmartCam in a place hard to spot at the first glance, this will enable the SmartCam to record a longer portion of footage if any “unwanted guests” visits your home. It’s not uncommon for thieves to take the camera during a robbery. This is why all Neos clips are saved to the cloud for 14 days.

In the unfortunate situation that your home is burgled, you will be able to view and download the clips from the SmartCam up until the point it is unplugged.

 

  1. Maintenance

As of the latest app release, you’ll be prompted when there is a firmware update available for your camera. Firmware updates are important to keep your SmartCam running as smoothly as possible as well as keeping them up to date with any security improvements that have been made too.
